Day 26 - Monday 7/13/2026 - Haines AK to Million Dollar Falls Campground, Yukon

Today we drove about 100 miles from our campspot on the Chilkat River in Haines, AK to the Million Dollar Falls Campground in the Yukon.  It was a beautiful sunny day with temperatures in the 60s.

Our drive took us through the beautiful Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve,

where thousands of bald eagles converge in the late fall to fatten up on chum salmon.  We saw a couple of juvenile eagles, but not much else.  We need to come back sometime in October or November to catch it during prime time.

The mountains opened up past the preserve and it was breathtaking views the rest of the way.

We stopped a lot and took lots of pictures.  There was snow on the ground all around us!  We didn't see much wildlife except for a couple of trumpeter swans, but it was a stunning drive.  Every day we say it can't get much prettier, and then it does!

We crossed the border into British Columbia, Canada with no problems - shout out to the nice border agent who helped us.  We crossed over into the Yukon and made it to the summit of Haines Highway.  There was an Auburn sticker left by someone before us! We left our sticker as well.  Mike spotted a couple of curious ground squirrels in the tall grass near the sign and got their pictures.  We have always just called them Chislers due to the sound they make...

We stopped to check out the Million Dollar Falls campground,

then decided it would make the perfect spot so we spent the night there.

The "Bear in Area" signs were out, and we are still on the lookout....

We decided to repair our kitchen sink.  It had come unattached from the underside of the granite countertop, so we reattached it with 5 minute set two-part epoxy (Gorilla Brand), and it is holding up great.  It was an easier job than we expected - we even hit the easy button afterwards!

We then had a quick gourmet homemade freeze-dried dinner of Beef Pasta Bake.  It was yummy!
