Today we took the ferry (the M/V Hubbard) from Skagway to Haines, Alaska. It was a cloudy day but not rainy until the evening, and the ferry ride was great. It hovered around 60 degrees all day.
Before we left Skagway, while waiting in line for the ferry, we met some nice folks from North Carolina and Utah and gave them a quick tour of ER150. Next we walked toward the waters edge and were able to see and photograph a beautiful humpback whale that was hanging around the harbor with the cruise ships (Thank you to the kind folks from Vancouver who told us about the whale(s) being there - we enjoyed chatting with them later too).
Mike got some fantastic pictures! On the ferry ride we saw another one spouting, but it didn't show itself like the first one. The scenery was unbelievable.
We saw a boat with a helicopter on it
and plenty of mountain views and waterfalls.
Once we got to Haines, we headed toward Chilkoot Lake and the fish weir, where there is a fence across the Chilkoot River with a gap in the middle for the salmon to go through. There were two guys sitting over the gap, counting the salmon as they went through. This is a stock picture of the weir:
We didn't see any
bears fishing... yet :) The
Chilkoot Lake Recreation Site was very beautiful too. We saw
bald eagles fishing and a beautiful curious
stellar's jay.
We had a great conversation with a couple from New Jersey with an awesome looking rig that they built on their own. Mike really liked it.
We also met some very friendly folks from Quebec and Whitehorse. Becky gave it her best shot at remembering and speaking French while Mike animated most of his conversation to explain the details of ER150 and life on the road.
Our campspot tonight is a little
turnout on the side of the road facing the
Lutak Inlet. The view out the starboard window is just incredible.
The kitties (and Becky) are enjoying looking at the water out the window and smelling all the new smells. Life is good today.
Tomorrow we will explore more of Haines and hopefully find some grizzlies!
