On Friday we decided that we were in a most beautiful place and we should stay another day. We took care of some domestic chores in ER150 and wandered around the area a little bit. Mike got a haircut using a river boulder as a barber chair. We had homemade freeze-dried lasagna and homemade sourdough bread for dinner. We might have taken a nap or two 😴🙀. The colors of the surrounding mountains, and the snow-covered peaks just behind them, are gorgeous. It was warm and sunny and a little bit windy, but we enjoyed having the sun on our faces again. We were feeling a bit water-logged.
Callie checked out our Membership info for YouTube TV on the laptop to make sure we had the correct channel lineup to watch the Auburn - Southern Miss football game tomorrow (and added Pet.TV to our list)! We've gotta watch her - she's sneaky!
We left this beautiful place early on Saturday so that we could be settled in Valdez before the Auburn game started. We thought the drive was beautiful the first time we came a few months ago, but with the changing seasons it has become even more breathtaking! What should have been a four (4) hour drive took at least double that. We went through some construction - I want this guy's hat!
When we left it was partly cloudy, and the colors were so saturated and bright. Then the sun came out and WOW! It was like God took a paintbrush and using the most vivid, gorgeous colors and textures, created a landscape that is impossible to describe. We took tons of pictures, but none really capture the reality. We are so glad we chose to make this drive and visit Valdez again.
We stopped to top off our fuel and shared a lunch from Ernesto's Mobile Grill in Glenallen - pork street tacos with avocado and beans and rice. The views of Mt. Drum were spectacular - at first it was peeking out above the clouds, then it was fully visible.
We were so lucky to have nice weather! As we got closer to Valdez the mountains surrounded us on all sides, some bare, some with snow on top, some glaciers, some covered with colors from yellow to red.
When we arrived in Valdez we went straight to the hatchery at Solomon Gulch since it was low tide and we wanted to see the stellar sea lions and possibly bears! There were what seemed like millions of gulls everywhere, and even more dead salmon - the smell was horrible!
We watched the sea lions for a while.
There was a guy whose job was to sweep all the salmon off the weir - it looked like hard work! He was having fun though, as he would stop every 15 minutes or so and get his phone out to take pictures of the Sea Lions playing below him!
We got settled and turned on the computer to watch the football game. We avoided checking our phones so we would be surprised by the score 😎🏈. War Eagle!
On Sunday we decided to take it easy and enjoy another sunny day at Valdez Glacier Lake. It is amazing that we are just feet from an active glacier and its lake with ice floating around in it.
Alaska is truly full of wonders around every turn. We ate spaghetti and read and relaxed and felt like the most privileged people in the world to be here and experience all it has to offer.
